Welcome Back to the New School Year

Welcome to our new families joining us this week and welcome back to many others! We are so proud of how the children have transitioned into their new classes. They have been busy talking to the teaching staff about the topics that interest them- take a look at the class pages to see what topic they have chosen. It has been a delight seeing them make new friends, experience their new classrooms and be proud of the achievements they have already made in such a short amount of time!

Autumn Term Whole School Book

For the first full week this September,  we are completing a whole school project based upon the beautiful book- ‘What feelings do when no one’s looking’. A charming and brilliantly inventive book about the feelings that live inside us. A book to provoke many fascinating conversations with the children- conversations that are being heard throughout the school. As with previous whole school books, each class will interpret the art and literacy in this book in different, progressive ways which we will then display in our main corridor for all to see. It fits perfectly with our school values and the overall ethos of our school.

Photos of The Week- ‘Let’s Talk About it’

To support the children’s vocabulary, and in order for them to keep abreast of current affairs both locally and nationally, we have a “Let’s Talk About It” assembly every Monday. Each week we have different pictures and questions to initiate conversations with, and between, the children.  We continue this ‘talking’ theme by asking parents to discuss activities the children have done in school each week. We provide photos on our newsletter each week to help prompt the conversations!

Sensory Garden

We were delighted to officially open our new Sensory Garden this morning. The roots of our Suckley Curriculum Tree are mental health, well-being, outdoor learning, community and values. Our Sensory Garden encompasses all of this and has bought our vision to reality. The raising of the funds was a true community affair, huge thanks go to our Pupil Council for their designs, The Suckley Quarter Marathon team, Alfrick and Lulsley Show and Community Shop Fund and Public Health England, for their generous donations towards the project.

Our Sensory Garden will benefit all of our children, enabling them to experience a calming, natural environment. It can also be an excellent learning resource, supporting learning in many subjects. It will assist in the development of biodiversity, the five senses, experiential writing opportunities, plant life cycles, the seasons and an opportunity to study insects and other wildlife up close to name but a few.

Our children (and staff!) thoroughly enjoyed testing the sensory path out with bare feet this morning!

Lucy Renshall- Olympian Visitor

What a truly inspirational experience! All of the children completed the physical challenges today set by Lucy in the church with excitement and enthusiasm. Lucy then led an assembly where she talked to the children about the ‘Mountain of Success’ she climbed, starting at 8 years old, until she reached her goal of the Paris Olympics this year. She then spent time signing autographs for all of the children. Thank you Lucy for making it so very special.

World Mental Health Day 10th October 2024 - Wear Yellow

Every year, thousands of schools, companies and communities come together to make World Mental Health Day that little bit brighter by wearing something yellow.

This World Mental Health Day, joined in and wore yellow with thousands of others across the UK to show young people that they’re not alone with their mental health. We talked about the importance of Mental Health and well-being in our 'Let's Talk About It' assembly.

Captivating Playtimes

Thanks to Mr Caterpillar...we found out he was actually a Pale Tussock!

Harvest Week 'An Apple Celebration'

Harvest is a very busy, important time for many of the families in our Suckley Community and we chose to celebrate it across each of our lessons throughout the week. We measured and counted in maths, we wrote poems and descriptive writing in English, we drew apples and Harvest scenes in art, we created apple-based food products in DT, we looked at the history and location of different farming in Suckley and talked about how we can support people who do not have enough food in our local community and then voted on which charity we would support with food donations this year.

Here are a few of the activities from across the week:

Congratulations to Robins Class for winning our Great Suckley Apple Bake-Off. A special thank you to our chief judge Mr Walker who had the pleasure of sampling each of the entries!

Macmillan Charity Fundraiser- Cake Sale

Thank you to everyone in the Suckley Community for your amazing cake donations and your continued support towards this charity which we support each year. Over the two after-school cake sales, we are pleased to confirm that we raised a fantastic amount of   £115.75. Thank you again for your generosity.

Children in Need 2024

We had a great time raising money for Children in Need. We looked into the reasons why we need to raise money for charities such as Children in Need and donated any spare pennies that we had.

We had a very special visitor on Wednesday morning...none other than Pudsey Bear himself! He visited each classroom and gave out many high fives. He danced with the Wrens and tried some of the work in Eagles! We spoke to him about the importance of raising money for Children in Need and how beneficial all of our pennies were.

Remembrance Day 11th November

At 11.00 O'clock we held a two-minute silence to honour the people who had, and still are fighting for our country. It was a time for reflection and private thoughts. In the afternoon each class acknowledged the importance of Armistice Day through art, drama, debate and poetry.

Governor Visit Morning

We welcomed our Governors into school this morning to see the amazing work of our teaching assistants. Following this, a selection of children shared our Big Books with them in the church. The children, and our Governors, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to talk about all of the learning they had completed this term and how they had accessed all of the different areas of the curriculum. We were very proud of the Oracy skills shown and the passionate way the children shared their learning. Thank you to the Governors for their time and continued support of our school.

Anti-Bullying Week- November 2024

'Odd Socks' day takes place during Anti-Bullying Week each year to help raise awareness of bullying. Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique! We talked about Anti-Bullying Week in our assembly and wore our odd socks with pride!

Christmas Celebrations at Suckley School 2024

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…snowy fields, nativity plays, Christmas concerts, Christmas jumpers, Christmas dinner, special visitors, pantomime, posting cards and a  Christmas tree filled with Christmas Hopes! All of the children have been thinking about Christmas and what it means for each individual person, they have written their own personal 'hope' for next year and placed them on our Christmas tree. We were truly touched reading the selfless hopes the children had written. We also designed our own Suckley School Christmas card which we delivered to our 'neighbours'.

Welcome Back to the Spring Term

Cooking Club - Spring Term 2025

We have been given the chance to have a cooking club - supported by the charity 'Let's Get Cooking', which has ensured we have the equipment and ingredients needed to run this successfully.

The children have been fantastic and are working carefully on the different cooking skills we have been teaching each week. Well done Suckley.

Whole School Book

For the first week of term we completed a whole school project based upon the book ‘The Promise’. ‘The Promise’ is the story of a magical discovery that will touch the heart and imagination of every reader, young and old! With poignant simplicity, honesty and lyricism, Nicola Davies evokes a powerful vision of a world where people and nature live in harmony. Laura Carlin's delicate illustrations capture the young girl’s journey from a harsh, urban reality to the beauty and vitality of a changed world. Not only did we transfer discussions, thoughts and experiences from this wonderful book, but we used it to inspire the children to become writers and illustrators.

The result was an amazing whole school display showcasing progression in art and literacy from Reception through to Year 6.

NSPCC Number Day

We were delighted to support the NSPCC

by taking part in Number Day on Friday 7 February 2025. Number Day was a great way to make maths meaningful, fun and helped to bring about a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude towards maths whilst supporting the important messages from the NSPCC.

We had a fun day of maths activities where we worked together to solve exciting maths puzzles against the clock with Buddy, the Speak out. Stay safe mascot and we took part in Dress up for Digits. The children (and staff!) were asked to wear an item of clothing with a number on it. Some of the efforts were very creative!

Ukulele Community Band

We had the pleasure of welcoming a local Ukulele band from Bromyard to support us in our new musical adventures as part of our music curriculum. Each child then had the opportunity to start playing, working together with a partner to support their understanding. We look forward to welcoming the band back in next term for the children to return the favour and play to them!

International Day of Women

On Friday 13th February we invited Mrs Seward to share her experiences with the children of her days as a geologist to acknowledge International Day of Women. She came dressed as geologist and shared her experiences through a presentation and role play. The children then asked insightful questions and reflected upon the answers.

World Book Day 2025

World Book Day was a true success. The children enjoyed being in their House Colour groups and took part in four different workshops; Axel Schaffner illustrations, making bookmarks, creating book covers and writing collaborative poems based upon our school values. The imaginative play throughout playtimes was intriguing to watch- Where’s Wally interacting with Voldemort and the Gruffalo whilst Angelina Ballerina and Wednesday were on duty! We also had a parade around the playground and discussed our inspirational authors in a whole school assembly.

British Science Week 7-16th March 2025

We celebrated British Science Week with various activities throughout the week . Wrens and KS1 built wormeries at Forest School and discussed adaptability and change through looking at the changes they see around them at Forest School. KS2 completed a number of science experiments with a focus upon observational skills, including the caterpillars they are currently caring for!

Platform Rail Workshop

Platform is an award-winning rail education scheme that works with schools to empower young people in accessing the railways. The children were given the opportunity to build on their knowledge of rail-safety, their understanding of sustainable and healthy travel and their confidence in using trains. The workshop was interactive and bought the learning to life, the children dressed up and enjoyed role-playing the different parts including being a dispatcher and signal officer.

Scholastic Book Fair

We thoroughly enjoyed the book fair this term. There is nothing better than spending time perusing through new books and being able to select one to dive into!  We have loved seeing the children bring their new books into school and reading them during our Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) times each day. Through the sales, we raised £284 to spend at the Scholastic Bookshop and children from each class will be choosing new books for their reading corners. The buzz of reading really is in the air at the moment and is lovely to see and hear!

Speak out. Stay safe.

The children have all received an assembly provided by the NSPCC. The assembly talked about all children having rights and the following 3 rights were shared with them:

1. speak out and have their views taken seriously

2. be kept safe

3. get help when they need it

We have continued to remind the children throughout the week the words “We all have the right to speak out and stay safe!” All of the children have been able to identify who their ‘safe adults are’ and we have created a display in the school corridor for the children to refer to.
