Welcome back to school.
This term our class theme is ‘Underwater World’ . Below is a copy of our topic web for your information. We hope to be able to go on a trip to the aquarium in Birmingham towards the end of the term to support our learning on this topic.
We also intend to do lots of cooking to support our maths knowledge and fine motor skills. If your child has had any change to their dietary requirements, please let us know.
This term we begin to focus on building fluency, expression and demonstrating understanding of what has been read. You might find that your child repeats some of the reading scheme books or that we use some alternative scheme books as we build fluency and comprehension. At school we will read both reading and blending books with your child frequently.
We ask that you continue to read with your child at home as regularly as possible and ensure they have their reading book and reading record in school every day, even if their book doesn’t need changing, so we can record any reading completed at school in the reading record. We strongly believe that any reading is good reading, and as such, if you child wishes to read a book from home instead of a school-provided book, please do so.
If you need any further clarification or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Yours sincerely
Mrs. Pinnington and the Wrens Team.
Stanley's Stick.
C&L/Lit - We started this term working on a whole school project considering the book 'Stanleys Stick' by John Hegley.
We went on a hunt for the perfect stick, and then used our imaginations to invent a new purpose for what we had found. The children had some amazing ideas including the sticks becoming jetpacks, motorbikes, wands, mops, and toothbrushes!
UNDERWATER WORLD
UTW - As part of our new topic we have been investigating the concepts of floating and sinking. In our first session, the children had to build a boat they thought would float. In the second session, the children had to find different items from the classroom and make scientific predictions about the items' buoyancy. They were very good at making correct predictions.
EAD/ C&L - As part of our new topic, we have been studying the book, Rainbow Fish. We have been thinking about the correct names for the parts of the fish. We used our new fish-related vocabulary when we made a fish out of salt dough. We decorated our salt dough fish with paint, discussing the colours we saw within the book illustrations, and added 'sparkly scales.' We will be adding our fish to our topic wall to start our 'Underwater World' display.
LUNAR NEW YEAR
UTW - The children have been learning about the celebrations around Lunar New Year. They taste tested some unfamiliar foods using chop sticks and had a go at writing chinese lettering with bamboo pens. We also considered the chinese zodiac and drew pictures to represent the year we were born in.
Maths - As part of maths this term we are thinking about capacity and mass. The children have been investigating the concepts of full, half full and empty in a variety of ways. They have also looked at simple units of measurment to work out the capacity of different items. They have been very engaged with this topic of learning and are now demonstrating their understanding during their play.
