Happy, Aspirational and Ready for Life

Spring Term

Welcome back to the Spring Term!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Christmas break filled with special moments with family and friends. It’s been wonderful to welcome the children back this week—they’ve settled in brilliantly and are ready for an exciting new term!

We’ve started the term by diving into our whole-school book, The River by Tom Percival. It’s a beautifully written story that explores themes of change, resilience, and the power of nature—perfect for sparking thoughtful discussions and inspiring some wonderful landscape art.

Next week, we’ll be launching our new topic: “Stone Age to Iron Age.” We’ll journey back to prehistoric times to discover their cultural significance, how they shaped the world we know today, and even explore links to literature. For more details, please see the attached topic web.

Reading

Reading remains a key focus at Suckley. Regular practice helps build confidence, fluency, and a love of reading. Please make sure your child brings their reading book and log to school every day. When they complete a full page of at-home reading in their log, they’ll earn a small prize in Friday’s assembly and be entered into our half-termly raffle! Listening to your child read and recording it in their log is hugely valuable. We’ll change books once completed and check comprehension.

Spellings

We reassessed spelling levels at the end of the Autumn term. New spellings will be given out every Monday—they’ll be in your child’s spelling book and available online at https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/. Please supervise online activity for safety. Spelling books should come to school daily, and we encourage extra practice at home.

There won’t be formal spelling tests in Years 3 and 4. Instead, spellings are practiced daily during morning skills sessions, where children explore word meanings and patterns—an approach proven to boost retention.

P.E. and Forest School

P.E. will continue on Friday afternoons this term. Please ensure your child has a full P.E. kit, including suitable footwear, and that long hair is tied back. We recommend leaving P.E. bags at school and taking them home at half term for washing.

Forest School is currently paused for winter to allow the site to recover, but sessions will resume soon —we’ll give plenty of notice.

Thank you for your continued support—it makes such a difference to the children’s learning and enjoyment. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Stay warm and safe in this icy weather, and here’s to a fantastic term ahead!

Best Wishes,

Miss Jones, Mr Walker, Mrs Butler
