This Term’s Topic is “The Epic Animal Kingdom!” Following Wrens interest in animals we will be exploring the wonderful world of animals big and small.

Wrens using chalk pastels to my smudge buildings for our whole school book “The Promise” which can be seen on our Whole School Display.

The Wrens Vet Surgery opened its doors this week. The children have enjoyed looking at X-rays, skeletons and taking care of the animals.

Maths ~ representing numbers using a five frame!

Expressive Arts ~ Wrens explored the non tuned instruments afterwards we looked at different pictures of animals and made music to match the way an animal might sound. We listened to “Flight of the Bumblebee” by Korsakov wrens investigated the tempo moving fast when the music was fast and moving slow when the music was sloooow!

Maths ~ Bugs in the Jungle! Wrens represented the bugs in the jungle on a five frame and found the corresponding numerals we even investigated 1 more and 1 less, fantastic mathematicians in the Wrens!

Physical development ~ Mark making indoors and outdoors

Understanding the World ~ Wrens sorted the animals we met in out story “The Kapok Tree” and animals we may see locally. Do they live on a farm or in South America? How do you know?

Understanding the World ~ map making, Wrens used the images of maps to create their own and draw animals that live in hot climates and cold climates.

Maths ~ composition of number 5

Steve the Animal Man visited our school! We met some amazing animals from all over the the world discussing the habitats and diets of the animals and using the vocabulary such as predator, prey, camouflage, nocturnal, diurnal mammal, reptile, birds and much more. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience... almost as much as the grown ups!

Physical Development ~ Wrens used their whole body to control ball movements and play games as part of a team. Wrens are using increased control and strengthening their use of peripheral vision.

Wrens garden ~ Wrens engage so brilliantly with the outdoor equipment and always impress me with the curiosity, enquiry based learning, trying and testing, having a go and enjoying themselves. I love the water feature instalment, the boys are trying to see how far they can get the water to travel, and the creativity at the easel, wrens we’re drawing on inspiration from Jackson Pollock.

Adding the bird feeders to the sensory garden tree, how many birds will we see tomorrow!

Happy Lunar New Year! Wrens explored lunar new year inspired role play and fine motor activities, we danced and made a Chinese dragon to seldom the good luck! We discussed why this celebration is important to another culture.

Understanding the World ~ past and present

Maths ~ can you balance the scales? Wrens have been exploring mass, demonstrating when items are heavier and the scale is lower, lighter and the scale is higher, using cubes the balance the scales.

Maths ~ exploring capacity wrens used cups which they used to fill different containers, counting how many cups filled the container. Wrens explained if the container held more or less cups.

Number day! Wrens enjoyed using the interactive board to count and match numberals

EAD Wrens enjoying learning the ukulele basics, we have some natural musicians in out midsts!

PD Wrens displaying excellent hand-eye coordination and throwing skills, using controlled movements to aim, project and release.

UTW- fast germinating seeds, CRESS! Wrens have been exploring the life cycle of living things including plants and will be able to observe the germination process through cress, runner beans, spider plants and various other seeds.

Happy Holi! UTW - rend have learned about the Hindu cultural celebration of Holi and engaged in their own colourful celebration to demonstrate good conquering evil!

UTW- What’s growing?! Wrens observing the changes that our plants are going through. Zany notices the bean growing in the dark cupboard is lighter than the bean growing with daylight. The bean with no oxygen has no stem but the bean with oxygen is taller.

PD- balanceability day one! Wrens demonstrating brilliant gross motor skills and showing progress in the first session.

EAD- Wrens are exploring the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and noticed the faces with features that are crops. We started by exploring what portraits are and creating a self-portrait.

Communication and Language - People in the community

UTW - Mmm delicious fruit salad! Wrens had a taste and a chop of fruit as part of out healthy eating exploration

UTW after two weeks we are sending the cress home to be chopped into salads and sandwiches!

Maths - Wrens have been exploring length and this lesson we explored and compared height using the vocabulary taller, shorter and the same/equal

EAD Wrens continue their dive into Giuseppe Arcimboldo observing closely what they notice in the paintings and how features have been represented. Wrens used scissors to cut out fruit and vegetables and make faces with different foods.
